How to Avoid Getting Scammed When You Hire a Web Designer Part-1

Some common web design scams and how to avoid them.

The Disappearing Designer:
You find a designer with good price and a nice portfolio. You email and get a quote and decide to hire the person. Once they receive your deposit, you never hear from them again or the work is finished, you make the final payment, then you never receive the completed site design.

Carry out the following:
If you paid via Paypal or a credit card and can file a dispute to recover your money. Use written communication to the designer one last time before filing a dispute.

How to avoid this:
When you look at a designer’s portfolio, take note of a few of the websites’ names and look them up. If the websites are no longer there or doesn’t exist, consider not legit. You should also check the site’s URL to make sure it’s not just a dummy site. in some case you can email the sites’ owners from the URLs you noted above and ask them to tell you about their experience with the designer.

It may also be a good idea to hold the final payment until the design is live on your site. Many designers and developers me included prefer payment before transferring the files to protect themselves, but remind them of the leverage they hold (your hosting login, FTP credentials, etc.) and they may be willing to make an exception.
